The “entrance” of the island of Lefkada among the lagoon of the area. On the left, the Grivas Castle, built by Ali Pasha of Ioannina in 1807, when he tried in vain to seize the Castle of Agia Mavra, which is, barely discernible, due to the ground level, although it is only 1,800 meters away (red dotted line). In the background, the city of Lefkas.
Lefkada can hardly be called an island, since there is a narrow channel that separates it from the opposite coast of Aetoloakarnania. The natural beauty of the island makes it a popular destination for Greeks and Italians. It is also worth mentioning that one of the first shops in Greece that sells art objects produced by the Murano industry was established right at the centre of the city.
